Evanston sometimes is called an urban suburb. It has a small downtown area comprised primarily of “lowrise” buildings with a few newer highrise buildings mixed in. Compared to the other Chicago suburbs, it is expensive.
There are restaurants, retail stores and at least three book stores. It is a pleasant place for a walk (this time of year) and is located right outside my door.

I prefer to walk over by Lake Michigan, which is just a few blocks further east. There are many very nice old homes in Evanston and many of the nicest and largest are (as one can imagine) close to the water and the beach.
