July 3 Fireworks

For some reason some organizations in the Chicago area are having their fireworks displays on July 3 instead of July 4. I decided to watch two of them.

As darkness approached, I walked to a point on the Northwestern campus shoreline that protrudes into Lake Michigan. From there the view of the shoreline extends south to Chicago and beyond. Officially the point is for use only by Northwestern people, but I was prepared to plead my case if necessary.

In case you have forgotten or you missed the mention in my previous posts, it does not get dark here until nine o’clock. That is when the Taste of Chicago fireworks display began. It lasted about fifteen minutes or so. It was pretty ordinary.

At 9:30 the Wilmette fireworks began. Wilmette is closer to Northwestern and by moving a few feet inland from the point I was able to get an excellent view and good sound effects.

The Wilmette show was longer and displayed better fireworks. I watched it with people from Ohio and Wisconsin.

The temperature was in the mid-60s and there was a moderate breeze. I wore three shirts.

More fireworks tomorrow.
