One of the best-known landmarks of Northwestern University is a large boulder set in a plaza in the middle of the campus. People refer to it simply as the Rock. It was been on the campus since it was relocated from Wisconsin as a gift from the class of 1902.
In 1957 someone got an urge to paint the Rock and did so. People have been doing it ever since and painting the Rock has become a tradition.
